Puna, Hawaii is one of those still " barely discovered" corners of the Big Island. A place which welcomed the children of the 60s and the drop outs and adventuresome of the 80s and 90s. The main town of Pahoa with it's wooden sidewalks and dilapidated store fronts is starting to perk up with new restaurants and shops, but still retaining the air of the sugar cane railroad town it once was. Kapoho which is about a 15 minute drive from Pahoa is the closest swimmer friendly area to the town.
Now imagine leaving Hilo airport and driving only 35 minutes thru sugar cane fields and papaya plantations on roads completely canopied by Albezia trees. You travel past an extinct volcano covered in a lush tropical rainforest and then arrive in the small community of cottages and vacation homes of Kapoho,Puna in what is called the sunny side of the East Coast of Hawaii. Here sits HONU KAI (translated from Hawaiian as Sea Turtle and Hula Cove, two of the island's most unique vacation homes.
HONU KAI is a totally remodeled 3 bedroom/ 3 bath house across the narrow street from the famous Kapoho tide pools. The house has 3 large bedrooms and 2 baths on the main floor and an additional full bath as well as a washer/dryer downstairs. A fax machine and computer in an alcove off the kitchen will keep you in touch with the world when the need arises. A jacuzzi in the rear of the house will relax you in the evenings as you try to count the myriad stars and identify the constellations. Ceiling fans cool the house and the sound of the ocean waves will lull you to sleep.
The tide pools directly in front of the house contain an amazing number of species of fish and, of course, sea turtles. Thanks to the protection from the reef even the novice swimmer has a safe and inviting environment for snorkeling or just floating in crystal clear 80 degree water year round. The Queen's baths, Kahena Beach and the town of Pahoa are all within a 5 to 15 minute drive away.
RATES: 2 people: $175 per night during off season, January, May, Sept., Oct., Nov. and Dec.;. $215/$235 per night for Christmas,Easter and New Years and $195.00 for high season in February, March, April , June, July and August. A 10% discount is extended to stays over 2 weeks only and KAMA'AINA guests with a local Hawaiian island address.
Honu Kai accomodates up to 6 people: $10.00 extra per person per night for any parties over 2. A 3 night minimum rental is required in season unless approved for a shorter stay at the time of the reservation.State & Local taxes are approx. 11.42% .
A one time charge for cleaning of $95.00 will be charged unless the house cleaning requires additional time by the cleaning staff. Then an additional charge of $20 per hour will be collected from your deposit.
A $300 security deposit is required prior to check in.
Check in time is 3:00 p.m. and check out time is 11a.m.*

Please indicate how many people will be staying at Honu Kai, arrival and departure dates your e mail, phone number and address for contacting you. Within 24 hours you will receive your confirmation. You may pay by credit card such as AMEX,VISA or MC or check * . A 1 night's deposit is due within 7 days after confirmation. Full payment is due 60 days prior to arrival. A one night's stay will be forfeited for cancellations within 60 days of arrival. Within 30 days of arrival no refund will be given unless the house is re-rented for the same time period.

Hula Cove is our newest home in Kapoho. It is situated on a hidden cove at the very end of the famous tidepools. The house is literally within feet of the water's edge. The house is a 1972 Hawaiian beach house with a large studio living room /bedroom, bathroom with shower and galley kitchen. A queen size bed and futon accomodate the house's guests. The house has a fully stocked kitchen as well as dsl for portable computers and a flat screen dish tv. The house is perfect for couples who wish to be as close as possible to the tidepools and admire the vintage feeling of a 70s Hawaiian beach house. It can be booked in conjunction with the larger Honu Kai across the street for families with more than 6 people. It also serves as your own private entrance into the tidal pools when booked in conjunction with Honu Kai.
Rates for 2 people are from $159 to $189 per night depending on season. A 10% discount will be extended to guests staying longer than 2 weeks and KAMA'AINA residents.
Low season is May, September, October, November to the 21st and December to the 21st, and January
Holiday rates are during Christmas, New Years, Thanksgiving and Merrie Monarch festival.
Taxes are: 11.42%
Cleaning fee is $75.00
A security deposit of $300 is required prior to check in.
